have the buyer pay by a cheque (clear it first) or best of all for safe funds, bank transfer

ok heres whats happened i listed a mobile phone and it sold payment made but paypal put dispute on it straight away. i thought the buyer had done this and contacted paypal but they said it was paypal and they think its fraudulent.well after nearly two weeks investigations i have just been told the payment is going to be reversed and i will have to pay the fee(what fee??? and how much??)
but i then contacted the buyer said what had happened and that i would cancel the transaction.
he came back quick as a flash and said its ok i will pay with an account that will clear first time.
am i being over cautious or is this normal.
is there a away i can still get scammed as 260+ is a lot of money to loose and i dont want to loose the phone and or the money.
any advice gladly received.
